Preparing for the Independent Study work
As I look up my work calendar, I notice that the first local tutorial session on Independent Study (for my accounting students) by me is at the end of January 2012; I am aware that some of my Independent Study students have already been doing some preparation work for their topic areas during the holidays. I would like you (IS students) to take a look at my faebook subject folder: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150101409692090.314231.713727089&type=1.
I have quickly browsed the 2012 notes from the UK lecturer and the materials are essentially the same as the previous one. I suggest that you join my facebook IS study group which is especially useful if you intend to conduct online survey with your fellow classmates: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150101409692090.314231.713727089&type=1#!/groups/143861262337078/.
You need to learn how to do literature review and make use of your Hull e-library. During the Christmas and New Year holidays, I have made some notes in my blog, covering some updated topics on using e-library and samples on research works in Accounting and Finance. I encourage you to at least take a look at the following articles:
Article 1: http://josephho33.blogspot.com/2012/01/example-of-quantitative-research-in_3188.html
Article 2: http://josephho33.blogspot.com/2012/01/example-of-quantitative-research-in_06.html
Article 3: http://josephho33.blogspot.com/2011/12/browsing-academic-e-library-brief-note.html
You should also note two things:
(1) if you intend to do survey questinnaires, you need to fill in a research ethics check form for approval (ask school admin for details), and
(2) most likely, your IS topic has to be related to Accounting and Finance (this needs further varification by me)
If you have time, browse through my blog articles on Research Methods. Actually, school admin has just passed me a research method textbook for reference. It is Bryman, A.and Bell, E. (2011) Business Research Methods, Oxford. This gives you some ideas that Independent Study project works need to employ some research methods skills. Such skills you could pick up via reading, though I will also teach this subject in coming local tutorial sessions.
