The notion of assignment deadline

About assignment submission deadline in project management term: You tell students that deadline means the "latest finished date" (allowed) but students treat that as the "latest start date", and they keep testing your tolerance limit..

Dissertation coaching - main tasks involved

Dissertation coaching involves: 1. Learn the student's main research interest, preliminary dissertation theme, career profile and existing dissertation project constraints. 2. Brainstorm with the student to come up with a dissertation project proposal that has sufficient practical and academic values. 3. Provide personalized tutorials, notably on relevant academic theories and research methods notions, resource support and feedback from time to time to empower the student to do his/her dissertation project. 4. Review and proof-read the student's draft on proposal and dissertation report from time to time before the dissertation report is to be formally submitted to the University. The dissertation report is essentially the work of the student; the evaluation viewpoints, analysis of findings and line of reasoning based on theories are essentially that of the student. Dissertation students usually are highly competent managers in their fields but are not familiar with a

Linear Programming exercise

ABC Ltd is a small factory which makes two components, C1 and C2. It has the following constraints on weekly production: Operative time 240 staff hours Raw material A 500 kg Raw material B 400 litres C1 uses two staff hours, 5 kg of A and 5 litres of B to make each unit. C2 uses three staff hours, 5 kg of A and 4 litres of B to make each unit. The contributions to profit from each unit of C1 and C2 are $150 and $100, respectively. It is known that all production can be sold. Requirements 1. Represent the above situation as a linear programming model, if the object is to maximise total weekly profit. (Demote the units of C1 and C2 produced each week by X1 and X2 respectively.) (5 marks) 2. Show the constraints from (1) above on a graph and indicate the feasible region. (7 marks) 3. Determine the product mix which will maximise weekly profit, and the maximum weekly profit, in (1) above. (7 marks) 4. State two limitations of linear programming. (6 marks) (Tot

Strategic Management Accounting assignment - suggested report structure

Some Strategic Management Accounting (SMA) students ask me to offer a suggested report structure for the SMA assignment : [September 2013] Essay title Table of contents 1. Introduction ["Introduction" section of the assignment essay is to briefly explain your essay purposes and what you intend to talk about; thus it is very brief.] 2. Notice for SMA classes A and C from Professor Tayles

Notice from Mile Tayles for SMA classes And C [will also be posted to SOUL): Strategic Management Accounting 26144 September 2013 Note to Groups A and C I am sorry that we had to stop the teaching a little early on Sunday afternoon, but we were unsure of the weather. I have spoken to Dr Joseph to ensure he can cover the material that we did not. So all groups will then have covered the same content. Assignment Note to All Groups This note records statements I made to you all in class about the assignment. It should be read along with the requirement printed on page 7 of the Module Handbook. Aspects which should come out in your work on the assignment are: 1. Application to the real world; 2. Some of your views on the Balanced Scorecard (BSC) and 3. Evidence of your reading of the theory. So, as a rough guide: • The outline of a BSC, the company vision, mission and strategies involve application. • A strategy map for the company involves application and your views. •

A case study of CEC (759) based on Balanced Scorecard analysis

For doing Strategic Management Accounting assignment (using Balanced Scorecard), I will use the example of CEC (759) as an example for illustration in coming SMA tutorial session. The Internet link doc See also related Youtube video 1 Series 1 ; series 2 ; series 3 ; series 4 ; series 5 ; series 6 ; series 7 ; series 8 Make sure you also study: Kaplan and Norton (1996) "Linking the Balanced Scorecard to Strategy" California Management Review , Vol 39, Vo. 1, Fall. pp. 5379. Reference FB folder on 759 Note: For SMA assignment, try to study a pofit-making company (not a non-profit-making organization); it is acceptable to study a company that is not listed in Stock Exchange [if it is feasible for you to do so.] It is theoretically tricky to appy strategic management thinking for a non-profit-making company.

Qualification required for Financial Controllers in HK

Due to my recent involvement in teaching in Accounting programme, I encounter a problem: do people need HKICPA to be employed as Financial Controller(s) in HK, especially in listed companies. I find that discussion about ACCA and HKICPA qualification are getting tricky (and emotional). Briefing sessions by some Professional Bodies can be quite biased and confusing (like a typical promotional talk by sales people in commercial enterprises). I am a teacher and my concern is for students to be a competent intellectual with good employability. Not to get too involved in the "debate", my findings are that: a. If you want to be a CPA in HK (qualified external auditor in Hong Kong), you need to go through the HKICPA scheme. b. If you want to be a Financial Controller in HK, e.g. in a listed company, it is not compulsory, legally speaking, that you must be a member of HKICPA. [see also video from Youtube and related article (pdf)] If you work for a non-listed company, the case i

A student's account about my lecture

Very often, I am not fully aware of the implications of my viewpoints as expressed in my lecture. Thus, it is interesting to learn my student's account of what she picked up from my lecture. I quote the following from a student's email: "讀完SMA之後我最記得你講过要“maintain sustainable competitive advantages". 当要連做幾份assignment及考試透不过氣時,又想起你的教導“just do it",“ 咁少事都驚,怎去保家衛國?“,便充滿能量!" Yes, I did say that in my Strategic Management Accounting (SMA) lecture, but I still find it interesting to have this student's account on my lecture. Many thanks to my student indeed. I understand that my teaching style does not suit all students.. but then I "just do it".

On oral presentation and reading notes

Univeristy requires the Business Admin students to make an oral presentation for their dissertation projects. Most students just read out the content from their notes with poor pronounciation; and the notes they read out have lots of grammatical errors. 1 student did not even provide powerpoint slides and just kept saying sorry. The summarized notes read out are often not a proper highlight of their dissertation reports. Anyway, the line of reasoning in the presentation content, very often, is disorganized and intellectually unimpressive. After listening to their "presentation" for 1-2 minutes, I felt so bored that I just made some brief comments and gave a low but passing mark to most of them. Quite many of them would tell me that they were busy these days and did not have much time to work on their dissertation projects nor to prepare for their oral presentations. One of the students did a bit better than others; but, after the presentation, she walked up to me and said t

"Best" [worst] systems in dissertation supervision

This centre I have come across has developed a system of dissertation supervision, which on paper is rational; the result is terrible. The main features of the dissertation supervision system: a. Ask teachers to produce a number of dissertation proposals and make presentation to students so that they can choose a proposal (and a dissertation supervisor) b. Use project control, including milestones, to control supervision process; making sure that supervisors will only get paid on reaching specific milestones. c. Delegate most admin. works to supervisors, e.g. making appointments to meet students d. Treat students as customers; and customers are kings. e. Offer generous pay to supervisors, if they can achieve milestones. f. Arrange lunch meetings with students so that potential supervisors can meet potential students. The problem is: a. Supervisors get a lot of admin tasks to do; the supervision task becomes boring. b. Students act like spoilt children; they do not respec

How to respond to a university's charge of plagiarism: some suggestions

A student sent me a email asking my advice on how to respond to the University's letter charging the student for plagiarism in assignment report. I took a look at the turnitin report which showed the sources of plagiarised content and the related similarity indexes. So, I said: a. Do not deny the charge as the evidence is concrete; just admit that you have committed the offence. d. As the seriousness of the offence is still not high, judging from the figure of the similarity index, I propose that the student makes a plea to the university to offer another chance to do the assignment again. [It is possible that the re-do report mark will be capped at the passing mark] c. State clearly that you will not not committed the offence again and feel sorry for what has happended. Since the education centre usually request students to do plagiarism checking before assignment submission, I do no know what happens to the control procedures. Also, the student has sent a email to her dire

"I need a First Hon." and "IC"

An episode: Rught after a 20-min dissertation report presentation to me, who acted as a second report marker", the student walked up to me and said, "Sir, I need 76 marks from you in order to get a First Hon.; the other subjects of mine are all above 70s; my disseration supervisor also knows about it, and he also gave me 75 marks for my final year dissertation..." I looked up at the student and said: "IC. Your report is not innovative; like many other students, you just stick to this service quality gap model; you made lots of recommendations in your report without further research design & findings to support your views. So, I just gave you 56 marks here... Anyway, you should not request me for a specific target mark right after your dissertation report presentation, and then to change your report from 56 marks (a grade of 'good') to a 76 (a grade of 'excellent') is 'very difficult'.... Should I from now on also give other students

Information Systems assignment and teaching plan

Assignment Objective: The assignment, which accounts for 30% of your overall score in this module, has to be done individually. The objective of this assignment is to develop your skills in assessing approaches in: (a) initiating, planning and controlling information systems projects and (b) identify and apply methods of organizing and accounting for information systems delivery and information systems projects. Assignment Question: “With their information technology (IT) investments, most organizations focus on the implementation of technology not on the realization of expected business benefits. Consequently, benefits are not forthcoming despite projects being considered a technical success. This failure to realize benefits is primarily due to methods and tools that emphasize improving the supply-side of IT delivery, including the use of outsourcing. No IT investment is ever just about technology.” (Peppard, Ward and Daniel, 2006). Critically assess 2 IT project management/ IT-

University ranking is important - but there is a problem

Quite some students, educators and employers I have come across are concerned about the university ranking. Obviously, the higher the ranking the university has, the more attractive it is as a student's choice to study at. I think evaluation of degree programme is more complicated than that. And, I am not prepared to examine the various evaluation criteria in this article. I have 1 problem here: ranking is not static... when you study for a university's programme, its ranking could be, e.g. 40; over time, e.g. after 20 years, its ranking can goes up or drops a lot.. Now, if the university that you graduated from 20 years' ago has got a much lower ranking now, what does it mean to you? Different people may respond to this concern differently. I do feel that university ranking is just not a vital issue in our career development within certain ranking range; and we do develop our own personal branding and career profile over time.

How personal coaching on dissertation projects works

In the following case of dissertation project, I illustrate how personal coaching works and why it is useful: Student A attends a dissertation project meeting, having a very vague idea that he wants to evaluate a potential Information System project for a company. The main characterisic for this project is that, the student wants to spare some effort on why certain software standard is relevant for the Information System software evaluation in his company's case. Other than that, this Master Degree student has no idea on how to formulate a proper dissertation proposal. Now is July and the student needs to submit his final report in November. The supervisor suggests that the student could consider theories and concepts from the literature on (a) standardization in the IT field, (b) Information systems project evaluation, (c) IT infrastructure planning, (d) Soft systems methodology, and, finally, (e) case study research method. The project supervisor some academic resources wit

Other points to note: (a) check your grammar; (b) provide a clear title for your letter of appeal. [You should be able to find information on how to write reports/ memos, etc in references on Business Communication]

Should I study for an MBA program?

Some of my students ask me whether they should study for an MBA programme after they graduate from their Undergraduate degree programmes. My viewpoints are as follows: a. If your first degree is in Business Admin, then further study with an MBA is not a good move because there is much overlapping of subject contents between BA and MBA programmes. b. If your first degree is in Computing Science or Accounting and Finance, then studying for an MBA can be considered. c. If you are below 30, then you may be too young to study for an MBA; probably a more specialized Master Degree, e.g. Marketing, Logistics Management, etc. will be more useful to you in improving your immediate employability. d. If you are not rich, or if establishing a social network with senior managers is not your main career objective, then do not go for Executive MBA. Try to consider MBA programmes that are not too expensive.. [you still need to evaluate the quality of the MBA programmes for making your choice] e.

Profile of Joseph Ho - a brief introduction

When I need to sleep, that's day-time; when I need to watch movies, that's night-time. Unlike most people, I really enjoy reading academic articles; like most people, I need to make a living.

The defining characteristics of good and bad students

Over the years, I have met lots of students. In my view, good students are not necessarily those who are intelligent and capable. The defining characteristics of good students are: Polite Appreciate the teaching efforts of teachers and show gratitude to teachers Responsive Willing to learn Show respect to teachers and the education system Many of the good students I have come across are not quite academic nor highly intellectual. Many of them are not rich; nor have they got a favourable environment to study. For example, they can be busy housewives with full-time jobs.. in short, good students, very often, need a lot of help from teachers. Bad students have the opposite characteristics of good students. For example, they never say "thank you" on receiving resources and help from teachers; they will not even order drinks when meeting teachers at restaurants; they do not reply to teachers' emails; and they never take the initiative to contact their teachers when

How to prepare for external examination

I have got this question from my Accounting student: How to prepare for ACCA exam. My advice is as follows: quickly browse through the syllabus, past papers and answers, and acca articles for the papers; then do some reading on textbook and academic articles to develop a deeper understanding for the subject.. about 3 weeks before exam, just focus on acca articles and exam papers; useful to write down some notes and key words all along to help memorizing. There are some lectures on youtube - useful to take a look if you have time. In short, if you have 4 months, first 3 months focus on long-term memory; last 1 month on short-term memory will be sufficient. 2 days before exam - ensure you sleep well till exam date.

Assessor's report on marking Independent Study assignments 2013

The following are some of the observations on marking Independent Study assignments - 2013: No abstract provided; Some of the abstracts do not have required information - i.e., they are not properly written. Variable X becomes variable Y, and variable Y becomes variable X in regression analysis;  S ome of the IS reports produced multiple regression reports (from Excel), attached them in appendix of the reports and did not actually interpret the Excel reports in the "findings and analysis" section. Quite a lot of grammatical errors are found in some of the IS reports Some reports do not use outlining Literature review reads like detailed lecture notes; the literature review skill remains weak for some of the reports. Referencing is sometimes not provided in some reports; a few students use footnotes for referencing - which is not a proper practice. Some students use too many quotations in their reports and some students write in paragraphs
