Study 2 subjects in 1 semester: how and why

A part-time student asked me how to cope with the workload of studying for 2 subjects in 1 semester, and that the student was also concerned how her English language skill can be improved. I think these are related questions, as most subjects require a certain level of English language skill. I would like to point out 2 things:

  1. Make good use of your long-term memory, which has a much larger storage capacity of knowledge. To do so, you need to study your subjects early on and do so regularly.
  2. Try to develop a reading mode based on "leisure" reading; develop a genuine interest in your study. Try to read textbooks and academic articles, not condensed study notes for this purpose.

On the topic of learning  English, I suggest students to read English newspapars and magazines; watching some English TV programmes and video clips in Youtube would also be useful. Recently, I also do some reading of English language booklets (re: http://josephkkhoworkdiary.blogspot.hk/2012/12/handy-tools-for-learning-english.html)

Learning is fun; learning how to learn  is vital to our continuous professional development. Once students reach certain level of learning competence, studying for 2 subjects in one semester should be quite manageable [if your day-time workload is very heavy, this could be a problem, obviously.]

Finally, I want to pose a question: why does student need to study in a hurry? Studying 2 subjects in one semester does not mean that the speed of learning is double of that with 1 subject. [I could understand why the education centre would like their customers [students] to pay school fees for 2 subjects in 1 semester instead of 1 subject.]
