Day-time tutorial 3  on Independent study:

1. Briefing on proposal requirement

Title: This should reflect the nature of the study you intend to conduct.
1. Study rationale: This should explain why you are conducting the study.
2. Objectives: You should try and provide three objectives. The first should focus on the main area of academic theory that your study will explore. The second should indicate where the primary research effort will take place e.g. to identify how the pharmaceutical industry uses relationship market to hold market share. The third objective should indicate what you want to get out of the study, this maybe to create new theory, improve overall understanding, develop a model or suggest improvements in current practice.
3. Contribution of existing literature (mini literature review): This section should provide a discussion of the key theoretical arguments that you feel are most relevant to understanding the issues your study seeks to address.
4. Methodology: How do you intend to conduct the study? This should include a description with a rationale for use of each of the following: i. Proposed data collection approach (OLS, questionnaires…..) ii. Sample frame iii. Potential limitations
5. Timeframe: Provide a plan of the time it will take you to complete each of the tasks involved in undertaking a dissertation. Follow the referencing style used in the academic articles you use in your assignment.

2. Briefing on presentation requirement

Advice to candidates: 1. prepare for the oral assessment 2. provide your assessor with a draft Interim Report before your oral assessment (this is not compulsory) 3. do not be late for your appointment (but be prepared to have to wait if presentations are running over) 4. provide a 1 page summary with bullet points of your presentation 5. do not exceed the 5 minute allowance for presentations 6. respond positively and creatively with your assessor when being questioned or when receiving advice to improve your study topic 7. take notes of any recommendations your supervisor makes so that you can incorporate them into your final Interim Report 8. submit your Interim Report on the right day and at the right time 9. ensure that you maintain contact with your supervisor during their allocated office hours for the rest of the module 10.keep monitoring the Canvas site

3. Revision of lecture 2 materials; aims, objectives and questions (video); on practical and academic values (an article). Types of research questions (video); basic ideas on research design (video) formulation of research questions (note form)

4. Study topics on literature review and correlation analysis. A video on literature review

5. Popular topics: capital structure, dividend policy, specific corporate governance topic (e.g. how the no. of female directors influences dividend policy); anything to do with corporate financial performance (e.g. how inflation affects financial performance of ABC industry; how RMB exchange rate affects financial performance on ABC industry, etc). A few students also choose a topic on working capital management.

6. Remember, remember: use secondary data and make sure they are available.

7. As I am not the marker of IS proposals, students could consider my view as a second opinion (not an assurance). They should keep refining their proposals via self review. The IS proposals are marked by the UK lecturer.
