Formulating dissertation proposals on project management with case study research method

When formulating a meaningful dissertation project proposal on the subject of Project Management using Case Study Research Method, a student has to accept the current  problem situation that he/she is facing. I provide two examples:

Situation 1:
A e-learning project has been introduced for a year in an organization; there is a need to review the project with a view to recommending future enhancement in e-learning practice.
Suggestion: A dissertation project with the following objectives:
  • To conduct a post-implementation review of the e-learning project of ABC Ltd.
  • To formulate a feasible and desirable e-learning process improvement project with a concrete project plan to ABC Ltd, with the existing organizational e-learning platform

Situation 2:
An organization is considering to introducing a corporate compliance system to process all corporate requests on establishing various forms of incorporation, e.g. formation of wholly owned subsidiaries or joint venture corporations, that align well with the organizational design of the organization, notably at the strategic business units' level. The student involved in this project is concerned that the current project scope of the compliance system project is too narrow in scope and that the existing project is not capable to cope with all the soft complexity with the this compliance project  in current form.
Suggestion: A dissertation project with the following objectives:
  • to review the project complexity of the existing compliance system project with a view to improve its project scope and objective definition
  • to figure out how to reconfigure the existing compliance system project team set-up and supportive project infrastructure so as to build up sufficiently capable project management capability of the compliance system project.
By meeting the two objectives above, the student-as-researcher intends to reformulate the existing compliance system project plan so that it becomes effective and manageable.

The formulation of a dissertation proposal on project management has to adopt the language of project management as well as to consider the actual problem-situation facing the student-researcher.

Once a rough idea of a project proposal has been made, the student could then start to do some preliminary literature review with a view to refine the project idea and, subsequently, come up with a concrete project proposal with practical and academic value.
