Preliminary comments on Independent Study reports June 2017 Comment 1 IS report ideas, e.g. on research design (e.g. choice of industry and sample size for survey research), should be informed by literature review. Justification of ideas primarily by quick wit or "simple" common sense, though useful, (and not by literature review) is mostly likely considered as weak justification of ideas. The quality of analysis is very likely to be considered low. Comment 2 Quite many of the IS reports I have reviewed need to provide much better justification of ideas based on literature review. Comment 3 It is possible that, in an IS report, a student could choose to study 1 industry (with a small sample size), but there must be good intellectual justification. Very often, the intellectual justification on studying a single industry is very weak.
