The following are the three main topics and themes as related to Building Services Engineering:

1. Thermal comfort
2. Life cycle costing

Research methods used are of two types:

(a) Primary data gathering strategies including measurement efforts with instruments, interviews, observation and survey questionnaire.
(b) Data analysis techniques, including cost accounting, quantitative modelling and statistical analysis (such as multiple regression analysis) that makes use of MS Excel.

It is possible that for data analysis, some additional secondary data can be gathered as well in data analysis.

Overall research method to use that covers both (a) and (b) can be case study, which can be single case study or multiple case studies.
