I. Course description
This
programme aims to enable students to use EXCEL as a tool to create powerful spreadsheet
models for analysis and presentation of financial/accounting data and business
results. Students will learn the important features of Microsoft EXCEL from
basic spreadsheet design and creation through formulas, functions, formatting, charts,
multiple worksheets, “what-if” analysis and there quantitative analysis
techniques.
II. Medium of instruction
Cantonese supplemented with English (course materials are prepared in
English and course lectures are conducted in Cantonese).
III. Duration of workshop: total 48 hours.

V. Syllabus
1. Introduction of modelling design and practices
2. Basic Excel functions as model building blocks
2.1. Range naming and cell addressing
2.2. Excel formula with +, -, x, /, total, %, vlookup, and IF, etc.
2.3. Basic cell formatting functions and multiple worksheets usage
2.4. Basic statistical functions: average, standard deviation, maximum
and minimum values, etc..
2.5. Excel financial functions:
annuity, future and present values, and internal rate of return
2.6. Chart construction with Excel
2.7. Audit Excel-based models
3. Advanced Excel functions for Accounting/ quantitative modelling
3.1. Scenario/ what-if analysis
3.2. Goal seeking
3.3. Forecasting
3.4. Linear programming
4. Modelling applications in Accounting: specific examples and hands-on
practices
4.1. Financial statements construction and analysis
4.2. Budgeting and variance
analysis
4.3. Breakeven analysis
4.4. Target costing
4.5. Customer profitability analysis
4.6. Capital investment evaluation
VI. ASSESSMENT AND AWARD
Students
are awarded the Certificate for Module if they can achieve 70% attendance rate
and successfully complete the assessment (4 individual assignments, each 25 marks, on business modeling).
