OISM assignment 2015 - (individual) - supple.

OISM Supplementary Individual Assignment 2013-14
(to replace online tests)

The OISM module supplementary assessment has 2 parts:
1.    1 written assignment weighted at 50% of the total module marks (this document).
2.    A 2 hour exam weighted at 50% to replace the Design Challenge group exercise and 1 hour exam (as were the main assessment).
This supplementary assignment has to be written in a report format.  The assignment consists of several parts in order to achieve the learning outcomes of the module and to develop your subject understanding.

Assessment Mode: 100% individual assignment – 2,000 words maximum.

Assignment Brief:
Consider any organization that you are familiar with or that you can comfortably discuss and prepare a report to do the following:
Apply ONE of the following OISM topics/techniques to from both an Operational and Information Systems Management perspective:
a)    Design
b)    Process Technology
c)    Capacity Planning and Control
d)    Quality Management/TQM
e)    General Systems Thinking

Assignment Structure:
Your discussion should be presented in the following FIVE sections and should be no more than the required 2000 words.
a)    Introduction – what the organisation is, the sector they operate in, what are they known for in the marketplace, what type of organisation are there e.g. virtual, direct supplier, 3rd party etc.
b)    Theory – which topic applies and what is the taught theory and what additional theory can you source to support this discussion. This is an integral section to present a strong and informed report so it needs to be thorough.
c)    Application – how can you see this topic working in this operation, is the practice as expected, is it different from the theory and if so why is this?
d)    Recommendations – now that you have analysed the application of this topic, can you see how effective it is within this organisation and can it be improved, how would you suggest the organisation does this? Remember, you will have had 3 lectures on quality management and improvement – use material like this and supporting materials to structure this section and guide your discussion.
e)    Conclusions – what can you conclude overall about how this organisation applies this area of OISM? What does this tell us about how this company works and succeeds in the business environment?

Notes:

The following points should be noted when preparing this report:
·       You should demonstrate that you thoroughly understand this concept/ technique for managing operations.
·       Your work should include some application of theories to analyze a significant situation instead of being purely descriptive.  An essay solely describing what has happened in an organization, without any personal analysis, will get a fail.
·       All sources used in the body of the discussion should be referenced even where you access business information e.g. Google annual reports.
·       Your document should be word-processed with up to 2,000 words. You may use tables, figures and appendices, which do not contribute to the word count.  You should put the word count in the front cover of the report.
·       You should not collaborate with other students.  Plagiarism is a serious offence and will be dealt with accordingly.

·       This assignment must be submitted in accordance with the programme regulations and by the date given.
