Answer all questions.


Question 1:

Seev Neumann, in his book Strategic Information Systems (1994) states that “strategic information systems are conventional information systems used in innovative ways”

a.        Examine, with real-life examples, how the three types of information systems of decision support systems, management information systems and transaction processing systems can be “used in innovative ways” so as to considered as strategic information systems. You are required to make use of 1 or 2 strategic information systems frameworks to support your reasoning (600 words) (30 marks)

b.        Examine, with real-life examples, how contemporary mobile technology can be employed in an information system for a service business so as to make it a strategic information system (400 words) (20 marks)


Question 2:

According to Slack, Chambers and Johnston, changes in business environment are shaping a new operations agenda, e.g. mass customization, lean process design, fast time-to-market methods and environmentally sensitive design.

a.        Examine, with real-life examples, how specific changes in business environment foster the adoption of two main operations responses and the main challenges of their adoptions  (600 words) (30 marks)

b.        Using the 4Vs of operations processes (i.e. volume, variety, variation in demand, and visibility) to compare the operations process of a cinema and a barber shop (400 words) (20 marks)
