Which centre to choose for studying ACCA courses
This is the question asked by one of my Accounting student: which education centre to choose for studying ACCA courses so as to prepare for ACCA examination:
First of all, the major centres use similar techniques: review condensed notes in workshops and then, review more condensed notes in intensive revision workshops; Centres I can name are: Kaplan, FTMS and HKUSPACE. My understanding is that the teaching style of FTMS and Kaplan are similiar and I am not familiar with HKUSPACE's ACCA workshop setup. I will not say which centre is the best choice to study, as I do not really know.
I advise students to do some study before attending these workshops, as I do not believe that it is effective and right to solely rely on these exam-preparation workshops to develop accounting competence. This kind of workshops, while useful, have major limitations as a teaching mode. If students want to develop solid knowledge for exam preparation, they could not solely rely on these kind of workshops. The school fees paid to study these workshops are expensive, given that many students are not rich. Sometimes, in order to cover many topics and exercise examples in one session, the teacher can teach at a high speed but teaching at a high speed does not mean that students can learn at high speed. Condensing study materials into condensed notes by lecturers in this kind of workshops can make the meaning of their notes unclear, confusing and misleading.. Some teachers claim that they are very good at predicting ACCA examination topics; I do not think it is a relevant consideration and, even if this has been the case, I do not think it is worth spending money in order to accesss this 'forecast' information.
Students need to start early to read around the subjects they want to study, and they need to read textbooks and some academic articles. Just reading study pads (or the notes produced by these centres) are not sufficient.
Students need to read past examination papers and related articles provided by ACCA. Finally, students need to improve their English language skill.
